SUMMARY:Webinar - Blood Genotyping
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you all to our next Webinar on Wednesday 19th November 2025\, starting at 6.30pm \nThe subject will be Blood Genotyping\, which is a hot topic in the thalassaemia community at present. There are many patients who are unsure of what genotyping means and what it entails. \n  \nTherefore\, we are very please to have Dr. Nick Gleadall leading the presentation. \nDr. Gleadall is a researcher at the University of Cambridge who works with genetic data and computer algorithms to improve blood matching and transfusion safety. \nIn this talk\, he will describe the Blood Transfusion Genomics Consortium\, a partnership between 14 international blood services that has developed a DNA test capable of typing blood groups in both donors and patients. Nick will explain how the test was developed\, how it works\, and how blood types are determined from DNA data. \nWhen patients receive blood transfusions\, their immune system can sometimes react against the donated blood\, making future transfusions more difficult. This is particularly problematic for patients who need regular transfusions. Nick will discuss how computer algorithms can utilise the high number of blood types produced by the test to select blood for patients. \nHe will describe the NHSBT genotyping programme and plans for the future of his work. This research could benefit patients who need transfusions by reducing complications and improving access to compatible blood. \nThere will be time for Q&A at the end of the presentation\, so please prepare some questions you may already have and we’ll make sure they’re answered. \nTo join the webinar next Wednesday 19th November at 6.30pm\, please use the following Teams link: \nMicrosoft Teams Need help? \nJoin the meeting now \nMeeting ID: 384 205 178 989 53 \nPasscode: iR9pp7Gi \nIn the meantime\, if you have any questions\, please contact the office at office@ukts.org \n  \n  \n
