Haemoglobin H

People who have been diagnosed with Haemoglobin H disease have three alpha genes missing, which leaves just one working gene.  Their haemoglobin levels are usually considerably lower than normal but most are able to live well.

Symptoms can worsen with fever. They can also get worst if they are exposed to certain medicines, chemicals, or infectious agents. Blood transfusions are can be require if levels fall too low. You have a greater risk of having a child with alpha thalassaemia major.

It is important to have regular check ups with your doctors to ensure you are as well as possible.
